Assessment

While abroad investigate how teachers and lecturers do assessment. Keep us posted on any findings.

Assessment is essential when teaching. Setting up goals and measuring what and how much has been learnt are core processes in teaching.

In order to do this professionally, you need to know about assessment. The 5 fingers of good assessment are:
1) What to assess - assess only what you need to know something about
2) Who to assess - remember all pupils, but not necessarily all at the same time or in the same way
3) When to assess - most pupils learn more and faster in the morning, so would that be the right time for assessment? Or should each element of your teaching be assessed separately? Or....?
4) Why to assess - what exactly is the purpose? Do you need to find out what to say at parent-teacher councils? Or how to help specific pupils? Or what to tell you head?
5) How to assess - what methods would be most useful to find the exact information you are looking for?
